Blackpool Promotion Results In GBP 90 Million Payday

Deloitte’s Sports Business Group has calculated the value of Blackpool’s promotion to the Premier League.

According to Paul Rawnsley, Director of the Sports Business Group the increased revenues from international broadcast rights of the English Premier League and extended parachute payments equal the “most substantial prize in world football”.

So in the first year the club should receive £40m from TV deals, higher gate receipts and increased commercial income. Then even if Blackpool are relegated they will receive parachute payments of up to £48m.

More TV Money for EPL

The English Premier League has sealed another agreement for international broadcasting rights. The £25m deal covers three season from 2010/11 and has been struck with Important Media House for rights in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

Sportfive loses EPL TV rights to AMI

The independent sports rights distributor AMI has been awarded the exclusive broadcast and new media rights for the next three seasons for fifteen territories in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The English Premier League looks set to announce that domestic and international TV and new media rights sales will total in excess of £3bn for the next three seasons. This news in the wake of the global recession and turbulent economic conditions has highlighted the recession resistance of football in the global marketplace.

ESPN Adds to its Sporting Roster

American broadcaster, ESPN, who have already taken on many of the now dissolved Setanta’s sports packages have added another with 43 live Guinness Premiership rugby matches. The deal is worth £45m over the three year period and adds another string to ESPN’s bow before they lose some of their Premier League football matches next season. Rugby advertising has been boosted recently by the introduction of digital itch side advertising inventories to some clubs and most national stadiums. This deal with ESPN ensures current and future sponsors increased exposure both in the UK and abroad.

French and Polish TV Deals with EPL

Canal+ has secured the broadcast rights for the English Premier League in France and Poland. Demand for the rights in France was high with Orange pushing the price up to approximately £15 million per season. The three year deal for the two territories is expected to bring in nearly £70 million to the English Premier league. Canal+ will have the rights to all broadcasting formats including television, internet, mobile, catch up TV and podcasts.

ESPN Purchase Rights to Serie A

ESPN have further strengthened their offering to the UK sports market by signing up Serie A football. Last year no British broadcaster decided to pick up the rights to Italian football but ESPN have celebrated their most recent capture by also announcing deals have been struck with all major television service providers. The new ESPN channel will be available on SKY, Virgin Media, BT Vision and Top Up TV.

ESPN Add UFC to Sports Roster

ESPN have bolstered their new UK channel with additional sports including martial arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The mixed martial arts organisation is said to be the world’s fastest growing sport and attracts a loyal following all around the world. Other sports include the French Rugby Championship (Top 14 Orange), the Australian Football League, the German Touring Car Series and the European Basketball Championships.

Serie A Centrally Allocates TV Rights

Serie A have sold the platinum TV rights and terrestrial TV rights to SKY Italia and Mediaset for a combined £685m a year for the next two years. The deal is the first of its kind with rights previously sold individually by club in the same operating procedure as Spain’s La Liga. Smaller clubs in Italy’s top league can now hope for an increased broadcasting windfall following the agreement.

ESPN UK Acquires More Football

ESPN, owned by the Walt-Disney Company have unveiled their latest additions to their UK football channel. On top of 46 Live English Premier League games and 30 Scottish Premier League games which were acquired following the collapse of Setanta, the network will be showing action from America’s MLS, the German Bundesliga, Portuguese Liga, the Dutch Eredivisie and the Russian Premier League. ESPN UK launches on August 3rd with its first televised match Everton v Arsenal on the opening day of the Premier League season. The channel will also show live games from American leagues such as the NHL and MLB.

Setanta Bouncing Back to the UK?

Following an ownership shake up approved by the Broadcasting Commission for Ireland (BCI) Setanta Sports could be back broadcasting to the UK. Gaiety Investments have increased their stake from 20% to 60% in Setanta Sports Channel Ireland whilst the previous owners have launched a new company Sabloss which owns the remaining 40% as well as purchasing 100% of Setanta Sports North America.

Infront Secure Serie A Deal

Italian football is set for a six year windfall following a deal with Infront Sports & Media. Infront have guaranteed a minimum of £700million per season for the rights to Italian Serie A and B and Supercup games. Infront are currently run by Sepp Blatter’s nephew Philippe Blatter so this deal may well attract some raised eyebrows in some quarters.
