While Nike has been dominant in soccer advertising in past years, this tournament saw Adidas become the World Champions. Adidas began to overtake its rival through the success of a Star Wars themed advert featuring Beckham, Snoop Dogg et al.

With the huge furore over the Jabulani match ball, a NM Incite survey showed Adidas overtook Nike in terms of buzz on blogs and social media networks. Adidas landed the final blow by its shirt sponsorship of the Soccer World Cup winners Spain.

The NM Incite survey has also revealed that during the first two weeks of the World Cup, FIFA Partners and World Cup Sponsors dominated online buzz. In fact out of the 10 most talked about brands 8 had World Cup affiliations (only Pepsi and Carlsberg did not have ties).

This World Cup halo effect spread to other markets as Budweiser, Hyundai and McDonald’s all saw a surge in internet buzz.

Coca Cola Sign Deal With The English Football League

The global drinks giant has supported the Football League since 2004 and has now signed a new deal to become official league partner. The deal will involve the drinks manufacturer delivering merchandise and “club experiences”.

The Football League commercial director, Stewart Thomson, said, “During six years as our title sponsor Coca-Cola has made an exceptional contribution to our competition.

“We are delighted that they have committed to continuing that successful relationship by becoming an official partner of the Football League.”

188Bet Expands Sponsorship to Rugby League

188Bet, sponsors of several Premier League clubs have entered the rugby league market after signing a deal to become the official betting partner of Wigan Warriors. 188Bet are already the shirt sponsors of Wigan Athletic who share the DW Stadium with Wigan Warriors. Only last week 188Bet became the official sponsor of the London Wasps rugby union team as the Isle of Man-based gambling website continues its expansion in the sporting market.

Carlsberg Switches Focus to the World Cup

Liverpool’s outgoing shirt sponsor Carlsberg will be initiating a £30m marketing drive centred on the World Cup. The initiative which will be Carlsberg’s largest marketing investment of 2010 will encourage fans to put forward their own team talk to the England team. Carlsberg are the official beer of both the England team and the FA Cup and have a long history in football advertising.

Burnley Secure New Kit Supplier for 20010/11

Premier League club Burnley have secured Puma as their kit supplier from 2010/11 for four seasons  earning the club approximately £2.5m over the period. Puma will supply all training kit, technical and replica kits giving the Puma brand great exposure in the North West market. They currently have deals with Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Reading, Bristol City and Leyton Orient.

Birmingham City Sign Partnership With Xtep

Xtep International holdings Ltd, a Chinese sporting good manufacturer has agreed to make Birmingham’s technical and training kit as well as producing replica shirts for fans. The deal brokered by Carson Yeung, Birmingham City’s new Chinese owner will ensure Birmingham have a strong foothold in China before they look to develop thir exposure.

Peter Pannu, Birmingham’s controversial vice-chariman stated:

“This is a fantastic deal for the football club. Not only is it a superb deal commercially, being the biggest sponsorship the club has acquired, but also on a brand level as it promotes the club internationally. Xtep are big players in the sportswear market in China and this partnership will expand the Birmingham City FC brand in the Far East.”

Newcastle United to Swap Shirt Makers with Spurs

After 14 years of manufacturing and sponsoring the Newcastle United shirt Adidas have ended their relationship perturbed by the amount of negative press surrounding the club at present. It is understood Adidas are currently in talks with Tottenham to become their new kit suppliers once their Puma deal reaches an end in the summer. Ironically it appears Puma will now become kit supplier to Newcastle in the summer. Newcastle United currently top of the Championship have been looking to restructure their commercial operations including putting the naming rights to St James’s Park up for sale.

Sheffield United Secure New Deal with GAC Logistics

Sheffield United and GAC Logistics – the largest independent logistics company in the world, who operate out of Dubai – have confirmed a new advertising deal. GAC will now hold in stadium advertising rights focused around their sponsorship of the South Stand at Brammall Lane. The deal is said to be worth £150,000 for the one year and is designed to increase Sheffield United’s international influence. The club already have agreements with several clubs around the world.

188Bet Continues Expanding in the Premier League

188Bet, the shirt sponsors of Wigan and Bolton have become Chelsea’s betting partner for the next three years. This follows hot on the heels of a similar arrangement with Aston Villa announced recently.
Peter Kenyon, Chelsea’s Chief Executive, made this statement:

“Having just concluded a major extension with Samsung, we are delighted to have finalized another significant deal with a leading brand in 188BET. Chelsea had a number of companies from this sector bidding to be our official betting partner but 188BET were the right choice, both financially and in terms of their ambitions and aspirations globally. They are making an impact in English football and therefore are an excellent partner for the future.”

Manchester United Sign up to Betfair

Betfair have been busy recently securing deals first with FC Barcelona and now with Manchester United. Betfair replace BetFred as United’s betting partner for the next three seasons. Betfair global brand and marketing director Oscar Nieboer said:

“We want to bring something different to the game and its supporters – Betfair matches rival punters against each other, and loves winners – and no football club personifies this more than Manchester United.

“This season, more than any other, United’s front men need to be at their prolific best, so The ‘Betfair Goal Challenge’ should add extra incentive for the strikers to hit the back of the net.

“We intend to use this partnership to reward both Manchester United fans, and football supporters as a whole across the season with unique content and real access from inside the game.”

Barcelona on board with Betfair

FC Barcelona look set to end their association with Real Madrid shirt sponsors BWin who used to be the Catalunan club’s official betting partner. Betfair the British peer-to-peer betting exchange will replace the Austrian company and will be able to use FC Barcelona’s image rights for media campaigns and will feature on the Barcelona website. The deal is alleged to be worth around £1million a season for the next two or three seasons.

Aston Villa link up with 188Bet as Villa Park dropped from Olympic Roster

Aston Villa have entered into a partnership agreement with 188BET (shirt sponsors of Wigan and Bolton), who replace Direct Bet as the Premier League club’s betting partner. The deal will grant 188BET access to in stadium advertising and promotional activities directed towards Aston Villa fans.

Unfortunately the club’s recently released news regarding the expansion of the stadium has led to Villa Park being dropped from the Olympics football stadium roster. The club were unable to guarantee the stadium would be ready for action in 2012 following its potential expansion to a capacity in excess of 50,000.

Macron Signs Deal with the Football League

Italian sportswear company Macron has signed a deal with the Football League to supply kit to 1,400 community coaches and to ball boys etc at all Football League events at Wembley. The deal is worth around £550k over the two years. Macron also manufactures shirts for Sheffield United, Leeds United, Rushden & Diamonds, Grays Athletic and a plethora of clubs across Europe.
