Cardiff City Swap Betting Shops

Cardiff City have moved swiftly to replace 777 Ball with SBObet – sponsors of West Ham United. Peter Ridsdale, Chairman of Cardiff City has secured SBObet as the shirt sponsor for the dynamic Welsh club. The deal is believed to be worth £500,000 over the two year period.

777 Ball and Cardiff were forced to cancel their agreement following the realisation that the Chinese gambling website did not have a licence to advertise in Europe. The PR generated by the on off deal ensures that the company have not missed out too badly.

Ridsdale was effusive in his praise for SBObet and his own club’s dealings:

“In these challenging times, it is very pleasing that the Club has secured a sponsorship contract with such a significant partner as Sbobet. We look forward to working with SBObet, who are making a most meaningful contribution to enabling Cardiff City to realise our considerable potential.”

SBObet were recently thanked by West Ham CEO Scott Duxbury for the forward payment of their sponsorship deal to allow the club to sign Alessandro Diamanti before the close of the transfer window.

Cardiff’s 777Ball Could Be Punctured

Cardiff City and 777 Ball are in the midst of face to face meetings to try and find a way around the predicament they have found themselves in. The 777 Ball logo had to be removed from Cardiff’s shirts for their last two fixtures after the Gambling Commission stated that the Chinese gambling company did not have a licence to advertise in the UK. All gambling firms must obtain a licence or have offices in the EU. The Chinese based company which has a Chinese language website is believed to be keen to carry on the agreement if a solution can be found. Cardiff City are currently maintaining relationships with several other companies in case the deal does fall through. Peter Ridsdale stated:

“We are in discussions with others who are interested in sponsorship. I’m confident that we will be able to replace them if we are unable to resolve this to everyone’s satisfaction.”

Allegedly the Gambling Commission only realised the deal had happened when they saw the Cardiff vs Newcastle game on TV. Mr Ridsdale has managed to keep his sense of humour throughout the ordeal saying “if anything, the best thing to come out of this is that it shows the power of advertising.”

777Ball Sponsor Cardiff City

777 Ball, a Far East online gambling website, have become shirt sponsors of Cardiff City for the remainder of the 2009/10 season. Whilst many fans of the club will be perplexed as to the identity of the new company at the least the money is right:

“This sponsorship deal, including its bonus structure, far outweighs the deals that we have enjoyed in the recent past.” – Cardiff City Website

777Ball may face advertising issues as they do not hold a licence to gamble in the UK which would prevent them from advertising in the UK. How they will overcome this will determine the success of this deal.
