Liverpool Still Struggling to Sell 50% Stake

Liverpool FC’s American owners have been looking to sell at least 25% of their stake for over a year and may have found a prince with enough money to make their fairy tale come ture. Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah is Chairman of the Fama Group a Saudi based holding firm and was quoted in Al-Royadh as saying he is “currently seeking to buy 50 per cent of the shares in the club which is now suffering of debts worth £245 million.”

A spokesman for the Fama Group at the weekend stated:

Yeung Secures Further 51.8% Stake in Birmingham City

Carson Yeung has increased his holding in Birmingham City by 51.8% to take his total ownership of the club to 81.7%. He is expected to complete the takeover over the course of the next few months. Yeung has big plans for Birmingham City and is extremely keen for the club to have a presence in China:

“Over the past 10 years China has had its sports boosted, but there has been no development for football, so I would like to make my humble contribution. In the future, when the team is stabilised, we will recruit Chinese players who have potential.”

Yeung clearly feels Birmingham City will be able to take advantage of the commercial opportunities in the relatively untapped Chinese market. As yet no club has been able to corner the market with Chinese fans notoriously fickle – preferring to follow their superstar heros rather than remain loyal to any one club. Yeung belieevs he will gain from advertising revenues if he can persuade his manager to introduce some Chinese players into the squad and help promote football in China.

Cardiff’s 777Ball Could Be Punctured

Cardiff City and 777 Ball are in the midst of face to face meetings to try and find a way around the predicament they have found themselves in. The 777 Ball logo had to be removed from Cardiff’s shirts for their last two fixtures after the Gambling Commission stated that the Chinese gambling company did not have a licence to advertise in the UK. All gambling firms must obtain a licence or have offices in the EU. The Chinese based company which has a Chinese language website is believed to be keen to carry on the agreement if a solution can be found. Cardiff City are currently maintaining relationships with several other companies in case the deal does fall through. Peter Ridsdale stated:

“We are in discussions with others who are interested in sponsorship. I’m confident that we will be able to replace them if we are unable to resolve this to everyone’s satisfaction.”

Allegedly the Gambling Commission only realised the deal had happened when they saw the Cardiff vs Newcastle game on TV. Mr Ridsdale has managed to keep his sense of humour throughout the ordeal saying “if anything, the best thing to come out of this is that it shows the power of advertising.”

Coca-Cola Supports Indian Grassroots Football

Coca-Cola have continued to develop their presence in Indian football following an agreement with the All Indian Football Federation (AIFF). Coca-Cola will sponsor the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy which is for footballers aged between 12 and 15. Coca-Cola hope the trophy will involve some 6,000 children from 31 districts of India. The agreement has been met positively by the AIFF and highlights the belief of many in the football industry that India will be a future area for commercial activation. Atul Singh, President & CEO, Coca-Cola India was swift to point out their involvement at the grassroots level and the importance of nurturing talent:

“We believe that Indian football too has the potential to make a mark on the global football map. However, at the core of this goal is the need to identify the right talent and nurture them well. Last year we had undertaken a grassroots talent hunt involving 3,000 players and this year we have expanded the scope through our partnership with AIFF. We are happy to partner with AIFF for the Coca-Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy which has the potential to emerge as a powerful youth program and create a grassroots football movement in the country.”
